As you Were in Egypt

Egypt has a military strongman at the helm. As this has been true for most of the past 60-odd years since the Free Officers Movement overthrew King Farouk in 1952 perhaps it should come as no great surprise. Successive leaders – Naguib, Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak – all came from the military even if they eschewed the uniform and wore suits instead. Now their ranks are joined by Abdulfattah el-Sisi, until recently an army general promoted to field marshal before standing down to contest the presidency. Last week he was elected with the support of 97 per cent of the voters on a low turnout and yesterday was inaugurated into his office.
