Francis’s statement was bold and righteous and we should not forget that it was not a pronouncement from the pulpit at St Peter’s: he was in the middle of ’Ndrangheta country when he said it. Francis will be pleased to hear that this has not been received with equanimity. ’Ndrangheta prisoners in the Larino prison near Campobasso went on strike, refusing to attend mass on the grounds, understandably enough, that they had been declared no longer in communion with the priest.
