We should be under no illusions about the road ahead, given regimes such as Iran’s are funding and fanning these conflicts. We will need to prepare for the kind of long war General Leahy has outlined by engaging moderate Islamic leaders and building our defences. As the economic and security dynamic in the Middle East and Africa turns away from petroleum wealth, Islamic nations will come under pressure for a new political order. Yet without any history of economic progress or pluralism, the masses are likely to remain at the mercy of radical ideology. Rather than empowerment against totalitarian leaders of the past, the future for many Muslims could resemble the dark of the Middle Ages.
