Understandably the Obama administration is anxious not to get too deeply involved again in Iraq. But after the alarming assessment delivered by Chuck Hagel of the threat posed not just to the Middle East but to the West by Islamic State jihadists, Washington must confront calls for airstrikes to go beyond their presently limited strategic goal of defending the embattled Kurdish and Yazidi minorities. They could hit the terrorists across a broader front, including the strongholds that spawned them in neighbouring Syria.
