Western reaction to the territorial conquests made by Isil in Iraq and Syria has been uncertain and disjointed. “Humanitarian missions” have given way to air strikes. There has also been talk, and hasty denials, of “boots on the ground”. But how easy discussion of such military matters seems when compared with the soul-searching that this country is currently engaged in over the participation of British Muslims in atrocities in the Middle East – notably the decapitation of the American journalist James Foley.
