Protesters Learning Lesson of China's Power

Hong Kong’s Beijing-backed leader has finally explained why voters can’t be trusted to choose who replaces him in a 2017 election. It’s simple: if you give the rabble a chance to pick a leader, they might pick someone from among the rabble.

“You have to take care of all the sectors in Hong Kong as much as you can,” Leung Chun-ying explained to reporters from three western newspapers before scheduled talks with leaders of a four-week-old protest.

“If it’s entirely a numbers game and numeric representation, then obviously you would be talking to half of the people in Hong Kong who earn less than $1,800 a month.

“Then you would end up with that kind of politics and policies.”
