To understand the significance of these events is to recognize the politics of prayer and worship in Jerusalem. Perhaps no thirty-seven acres are more contested in the history of the world than those situated in the eastern part of the Old City. Entering one of the Old City’s seven towering gates and walking toward the walled compound entails physically passing through the intersection of the three great monotheistic religions.
