A Most Welcome Fall in Inflation

Much of Britain’s post-war history has been characterised by bouts of high inflation, an economic curse which has harmed investment, destroyed savings and undermined competitiveness. Yesterday’s announcement that inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, fell in December to just 0.5 per cent – the lowest level since this way of measuring inflation was first devised – is therefore overwhelmingly positive news. Recent additional cuts in fuel prices mean that it will almost certainly fall even further before it starts rising again.
