For many years, the world has looked at the Middle East in fear that any conflict there could spill over into a region-wide war that pits the two great sects of Islam against each other. The fear of a wide-ranging war between the Sunni nations and the Shia is now realised. On the weekend the Sunni Arab states announced that they were forming a joint army, a standing force of some 40,000 elite troops.
