As America’s ambassador to Singapore in the first Obama term, I proudly served as a foot soldier in the U.S. “pivot” to Asia. Today, as that strategy increasingly depends on completing and implementing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free-trade accord, my time in Singapore offers some sharp lessons. Chief among them: U.S. friends in Asia want greater U.S. involvement in the region, but they also need space to cooperate with a rising China. If U.S. leaders forget this in pushing the TPP, they risk long-term harm to U.S. interests in Asia.
