The Middle East Shakeout Hits Turkey

On July 24 a Turkish aircraft attacked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) targets in Syria as well as scores of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) sites in Iraq and Turkey. It is expected that US aircraft will soon join Turkey in coordinated attacks on ISIL sites in both Syria and Iraq. The US did not want at this stage of the widening war to be seen as overtly condoning attacks on PKK bases while the PKK's affiliate, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) -- the dominant Syrian Kurdish nationalist organization in Syria, is waging a war against ISIL.
