Russia Gains Nothing from Hard-Line on Islands

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev visited Etorofu, an island in the disputed Northern Territories off Hokkaido, on Aug. 22.

Medvedev stated that Russia had no intention of making concessions to Japan over the long-standing territorial dispute and pledged to continue visiting the chain of islands, which were seized by the Soviet Union in the last days of World War II and are under Russian control.

A nation that has a territorial dispute with a neighbor should try to find a peaceful solution through dialogue. Certainly, a nation with a sense of international responsibility is expected to behave that way.
