When he came to government in 1997, Tony Blair benefited from the comradeship of an arc of centre-left governments — in the US, France, Germany and Italy. There is not a leftist surge under way now: Podemos is as near as it comes to a hopeful beginning. But the leftist Syriza government’s experience in Greece is a warning of how cold is the sea in which appeals to socialism swim.
