Both countries want to defeat Isis. Since it cannot be achieved from the air — and the ground is a fool’s errand — diplomacy is the only choice. There is no need to peer into Mr Putin’s soul, as Mr Bush once tried to do. When it comes to Syria, the US and Russian presidents ought to be able to see eye- to-eye.
