For all its imperfections and charming eccentricities, especially before Britain’s mid-19th-century Reform Acts, choosing individual members from individual ridings restrained the presumption of rulers all the way back to Simon de Montfort’s 1265 model parliament. It defeated executive efforts to break free of Magna Carta and the rule of law under Lancasters, Tudors, Stuarts and Hanovers. It should not casually be abolished by Trudeaus.
