AK-47s and other varieties of assault rifles have featured in nearly all the Isil-inspired terror incidents on mainland Europe this year, from the attacks on a cartoon festival in Denmark in February through to the lone gunman on the French train at Thalys in August, whose plan to turn the carriage into a charnel house was thwarted by two quick-thinking US servicemen. Part of the problem here, of course, is not the supply of the guns themselves, so much as the supply of people willing to use them in such random fashion on their fellow citizens. But let there be no mistake: a Kalashnikov makes a terrorist's job a great deal easier than any other kind of gun.
