If the deselections start, the strategy should be clear. The deselected, who would include some of Labour’s most distinguished names, should simply form a Democratic Labour Party and fight their old constituencies, appealing directly to the voters whose support they retain. The present Labour Party is increasingly surrendering its place in democratic British politics, and anyone who thinks Oldham disproves that contention needs urgently to adjust their sets.
