This phenomenon is universally described as a repudiation of complacent political leaders who have lost touch with their electorates: of government that is no longer accountable to its own people. The sense that your national leaders should be answerable to you, the citizen, is the basis of a healthy democratic process. The more distant and remote governmental power is, the more volatile and irresponsible voters seem to become. They will support infantile Marxism in Britain, neo-fascism in France, and a know-nothing loudmouth in America – just to assert their anger and frustration.
