All this buzz inflating the consequence of this election is, unfortunately, driven by an undue emphasis on the campaign horse race and based on an obsolete, oversimplified depiction of Iranian politics. Don’t get me wrong: The elections matter, and the next several days offer an important window on the Islamic Republic’s evolving politics. But the vote is unlikely to prove decisive in shaping the balance of power, the future selection of Iran’s leadership, or the longevity of the nuclear deal.
