The financial crisis, and its aftermath, made apparent — first to financial observers, and gradually to the German public — that Deutsche Bank had embarked on a new global business model, without entirely shedding the old cozy model of Deutschland AG. That made it an awkward fit in both worlds, and unable to become a full member of either.
