What the Turkey Deal Says About Europe

They are right that this is an important deal that tells us much about our future. It’s just that they are wrong about the way in which it does. The debate about Turkey – full membership of the EU, associate membership or simply close associate – is, in essence, the same one we are having about Britain’s membership. Open or closed? A Britain in the EU is open for business – for free trade, free movement of capital, goods and services and free movement of labour. Outside we will have chosen to close ourselves. Similarly, the question of Turkey is the question of the EU’s future.
