Those who think that a break-the-furniture candidate like Trump would never prosper in a common-sense country like Britain should look at the Scottish election results this morning. There will be a stunning victory for a party whose “Scotland first” message is as vacuous as Trump’s “America First”. They should look at Ukip’s rise in Wales and wonder what might happen if “Remain” scores a narrow win in the referendum. Might Ukip might enjoy the post-defeat resurgence now enjoyed by Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP? And will the Tory Party tear itself apart after that referendum?
