All the Tories had to do was select a candidate who could appeal to non-Tories and they would stroll to victory. Once Zac Goldsmith was confirmed as the Tory candidate, expectations peaked. Despite the underlying electoral facts of London favouring Labour (it has most of the MPs in the capital and the Labour vote grew in 2015 while falling everywhere else), many people thought Mr Goldsmith a dead cert.
