The Brazilians displayed those characteristics that make them such a wonderful people in the Olympic Games opening ceremony: humour, modesty, self-deprecation and an appreciation for very good music indeed. The clever people from the west came to sneer at their low-budget stage management but left the Maracana grudgingly impressed. It was all such a crashing contrast with everything delivered on Friday night by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach, who was a pitifully depressing figure to behold.
