Palestinian Authority officials were crying smear yesterday about the report broadcast on Israel's Channel 1 that PA leader Mahmoud Abbas was a Soviet mole. The information comes from an archive kept by KGB defector Vasily Mitrokhin that is widely considered the most authoritative source on Soviet intelligence operations. But while it is embarrassing for someone who is treated like a world leader to be branded as a one-time spy, does it really matter what he was doing in the 1980s long before he succeeded Yasir Arafat?
