He nearly ended the world by welcoming Soviet nuclear missiles into Cuba, a few minutes flying time from Washington and New York. His part in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the world has come to an actual nuclear war, was perhaps the worst of all his many cruel and disastrous actions.
