Grand bargains prove usually to be neither grand nor bargains. But they are tempting. Faced with di cult geopolitical conundrums, politicians' egos all too often trump prudence. Surely the way to break the logjam is through decisive (even “visionary”) leadership? The bureaucrats can deal with the details.
