While the European debt crisis has given Greece plenty to worry about in the near term, climate change presents its own set of longer-term fears. Greece's long Mediterranean coastline area (the most extensive of any Mediterranean country) will be more susceptible to rising water levels, heat waves and droughts as temperatures rise. Of particular concern to Greece is the impact of heat waves on the nation's forests. The country suffered two devastating forest fires - one in 2007 by arsonists and another in 2009 - which decimated large swaths of woodland.
