China Post

Founded in 1952 by exiled Chinese mainlanders, the China Post is one of Taiwan's leading English-language dailies, with a circulation of about 400,000. The print edition of the Post is read mainly by Taiwan's intellectual elite and college students interested in world affairs and learning English. The China Post's editorial position is unabashedly pan-Blue, meaning that for the most part it supports the Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) and its more conciliartory agenda toward mainland China. The Post's main competitor is the Taipei Times, founded by pro-Taiwan independence interests and generally in support of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Without a free press in mainland China, it's difficult to find balanced and critical opinion on the world's most populous nation and budding super power. But across the Taiwan Strait, such material is readily available in one of Asia's most vibrant democracies. China Post's prolific opinion section features a number of renowned journalists and analysts, including Peter Brookes, John Metzler, Frank Ching and Arthur Cyr. The paper's web site - www.chinapost.com.tw - is also highly respected and updated daily with international, China and Taiwan news.
