10. Attack on Berlusconi

It's not everyday a head of state of a major European country gets his face smashed with a plaster souvenir, but such was the sorry fate that befell Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. While attending a political rally in Milan on Dec. 13, 42-year-old engineer Massimo Tartaglia hurled a replica of the Duoma cathedral at the prime minister's face. A bloodied Berlusconi was rushed from the scene having suffered a broken nose, two broken teeth, a gash under his eye and cuts on his lip (one of which required stitches). To add insult to horrific injury, within hours of the attack, some 20,000 people had signed up to Facebook groups lauding Mr. Tartaglia as a hero. (AP Photo)
