No. 1 Cameroon

Rich in natural resources and abundant arable and pastoral land, Cameroon would at first glance seem an unlikely candidate for food insecurity. Yet with an economy heavily dependent on crop exports, Cameroon is left to rely on agricultural imports in order to sustain itself. Add to that natural and man-made disasters, poverty and poor national infrastructure, and you have some of the key ingredients to food insecurity. Much of this came to a head in 2008, when food riots broke out as skyrocketing oil prices caused the cost of basic food imports to rise dramatically. In an effort to prevent future crisis, the World Food Program has targeted some of Cameroon’s most insecure locations, providing community granaries and food aid to primary schools.
