The head of a 14-year-old girl with closed eyes emerges from the waters of Guanabara Bay by Botafogo Beach at the foot of the famous Sugarloaf Mountain. It is the latest sculpture by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, who says his aim is to "make people dream". 

In various areas of Aleppo, the deserted city that was once Syria's commercial hub, the frontline runs past window blinds from behind which snipers fire. Although very few civilians dare to venture out, some residents refuse to leave their devastated homes.
