Before the war, Aleppo was Syria's biggest city and commercial centre. Now it lies in ruins, roughly divided in half between the government and opposition. But this could change soon as the forces of President Bashar al-Assad, backed by Russian air strikes, are on the brink of encircling the rebel-held east of the city.
