Gen. Michael Hayden: North Korea "May Not Be Deterrable," "Sooner or Later" Will Get Nukes

|

President Trump has inherited a cyberwar against North Korea’s missile program, according to new reports by David Sanger in the New York Times. Sanger joins former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden on "Morning Joe" to discuss the program.

MARK HALPERIN: The key to dealing with North Korea from the point of view of lots of policymakers has been China and trying to get China to do more. What is China's current posture towards what is now a looming threat from the North Korean nuclear [weapon] program?

MICHAEL HAYDEN: They are made uncomfortable by this too, but not so uncomfortable that they would take that step-function action and really do something that would cause the North Koreans to reconsider. and, mark, we've really got to think through, there might not be anything that would cause the North Koreans to reconsider. Jim Clapper, the director of national security, within the last year in open testimony, said that it's perfectly logical and almost inevitable that these guys have to get a nuclear capability. They're looking around the world. They're taking a look at what happens to countries when they don't have them. They look at Iraq and they look at Libya. They may not be deterrable in terms of the policy options that we are or even the Chinese might have...and especially the Chinese can slow them down; can make it more costly; can make them more isolated because of it. But I think they are determined, and sooner or later, they are going to get the ball across the end line.
