Rachel Maddow: Trump State Department Cuts Should Please Vladimir Putin

|

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow reports on Andrea Mitchell's encounter with security at the State Department and says Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is cutting the department in the same way Vladimir Putin would want.

"If you're Russia, especially under Vladimir Putin, you have no desire to be under a Western alliance of free countries," she said. "You don't want to be part of something that is led by someone else."

"The U.S. State Department isn't military force, the U.S. State Department is American leadership in the world, the U.S. State Department organizes the world to support international organizations to support the post-war stable world that America leads. The U.S. State Department is in charge of soft power. American led interests in countries around the world," Maddow reported.

"The U.S. State Department does support critical media in Russia," she added. "It calls out Russian elections as neither free nor fair."

"The one existential threat Vladimir Putin fears after 17 years in power... is a revolution by his own people. A color revolution or Arab spring type uprising... Putin has raged against the U.S. State Department for supporting-- no organizing those protesters."
