To win wars, you need strong and commanding leadership. Whether it comes from a wily political operator such as David Lloyd George or an inspiring orator such as Winston Churchill, a military campaign requires decisive and effective political direction if it is to achieve success. And so far as Britain's involvement in Afghanistan is concerned, Gordon Brown's anonymity is fast becoming a national liability.

The Prime Minister may claim that he has his hands full trying to sort out the financial crisis and preparing for the G20 summit. But that is no excuse for his woeful neglect of the arguably the most important military campaign Britain has fought since the Second World War, which is now teetering on the precipice between success and failure.
