Striving for 'Normal' Cross-Strait Visits

Political leaders from Beijing used to firmly claim Taiwan as a province of People's Republic of China (PRC). They frequently reaffirmed this statement on various occasions, both at home and abroad, in order to consolidate their determination on the issue of re-unification and gain public support. However, the tone has improved since Beijing-friendly President Ma Ying-jeou took office last May. Recently, both sides across the Taiwan Strait have been increasingly realistic and practical on some politically non-sensitive issues, including economic reciprocity and cultural exchanges. In light of sovereignty, both Beijing and Taipei have agreed to abide by the “1992 Consensus” which allows both sides to interpret the term “one China” individually.
