On the European Union's eastern borders a new version of the 19th century Great Game, the strategic rivalry between the Russian and British empires in central Asia, is playing out.
The 19th century version of this confrontation focused on Persia and the ‘Stan' countries – especially Afghanistan – the buffer region between Britain's Indian empire and an expanding Russia. Today the hot spots are located in eastern and south-eastern Europe, especially Ukraine, where Russia finds itself vying for influence with the EU.
