We all have moments where we feel we have lost the will to live, and mine came on Monday evening when, just before retiring, I looked at the Telegraph website and saw that Gordon Brown was promising to remain Prime Minister. What, I asked myself, has any of us done to deserve that?
Tomorrow Mr Brown will have a referendum on his stewardship of our nation. His inability to control events has been proved by the announcement, before it, that his Home Secretary would be leaving her job, and the distinct possibility that the Chancellor will be going with her. If we are to believe the opinion polls, the outcome for him of the elections will be neither happy nor propitious, one imagines all the less so because of this disarray and the incompetence it unmasks. After the necessary distraction of the expenses scandal, many who vote will do so out of disgust at the mess our country is in thanks to Labour's sheer inability to govern.
