Europe’s center-right enjoyed an unexpectedly large victory over their socialist rivals in elections to the European Parliament on Sunday, as voters went to the polls across the 27-member bloc in what is the second largest electoral exercise in the world.
With almost all results tabulated, the parliament’s main conservative grouping was on course for 263 seats in the 736-member chamber, with the Socialists far behind on 161 seats. The centrist Liberals trailed with 80 mandates, while an assortment of nationalist, green, conservative and far-left deputies split the remaining 259 seats.
