Iran’s Guardians Council is expected to certify the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday, despite serious allegations of fraud, 10 days of protest and violence on a scale unprecedented in the Islamic Republic’s 30 years of existence.
Accused of having stolen an election and savagely suppressing the demonstrations, the regime will now likely move into a mode of extreme repression at home, while remaining isolated, withdrawn and dangerous internationally.
