Good news in Iraq never comes undiluted. And so, while its people celebrated Tuesday's landmark withdrawal of U.S. armed forces from the country's towns and cities, a car bomb detonated in Kirkuk, killing at least 27 people.

Those with no firsthand knowledge of Iraq project their own prejudices onto the place. It was America's second Vietnam, some say, a quagmire that took more than 4,000 American lives for no good reason and that will end in bloodshed as Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds descend into sectarian civil war.
