Indonesia's Proudly Normal Election

 

One sign of Indonesia’s democratic progress has been the obsession with opinion polls in the lead-up to Wednesday’s presidential election, a vote that takes Indonesia a further step toward consolidating its democratic system.

As it stands, incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono — popularly known as S.B.Y. — and his running mate, Boediono (Indonesians regularly go by only one name), a former central bank governor, are in a commanding position to take a majority and possibly win the vote in a single round.
