Feeling sorry for a Cabinet minister is a dangerous act, and I shall try not to make it a habit. But one would have needed the proverbial heart of stone not to sympathise with Bob Ainsworth, our pathetic, fourth-choice Minister of Defence, when he exposed his insecurities and sense of inadequacy to the nation in an interview this week. Unlike some of his senior colleagues, Mr Ainsworth sees that the Government has failed our Armed Forces monumentally. At least that is a start: though, given Mr Ainsworth's touching admission of his own limitations, I do worry that matters are unlikely to improve very soon.
