It can feel futile to point out the barbarity of a government we already know to be primitive and cruel. The Khartoum regime, headed by President Omar al-Bashir, has in the last decade rigged an election, killed assorted detainees and protesters without trial, and, in Darfur, "bombed villages, killed civilians including internally displaced persons ... and collaborated with janjaweed militias and tribal factions to raze villages and perpetrate violence against women," according to the U.S. State Department's 2008 Human Rights Report.
