An Election That Just Might Save Afghanistan

 

Over a cup of green tea in the capital of Helmand Province last week, an extravagantly bearded farmer called Sayeed Ali glanced nervously left and right, then told me he would not be risking his life tomorrow to take part in Afghanistan's second presidential election.

"Why should I vote for these politicians?" he said. "We have neither security nor development for our families. And if I do vote, the Taliban may kill me."
