Here is a novelty: the discovery of an issue on which the prime minister and his administration have been reluctant to express a view.

Even its strongest supporters would not argue that the talents of the Blair-Brown governments have been of the silent kind. Labour prime ministers and their political colleagues twitter away about everything from breakfast to bedtime. It is all part of the lamentable new political orthodoxy that because news is reported 24 hours a day politicians should react 24 hours a day. We know what Mr Brown and the government think about Brighton Football Club’s escape from relegation, the health of talent show star Susan Boyle and, of course, England’s cricket victory (they were in favour of it). So why have we been denied their views on the release by the Scottish justice minister of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi?
