“Man's calculations cannot compare to heaven's calculations,” goes an old Chinese saying. Or, to quote a somewhat similar English aphorism, “Man proposes, God disposes.”
Certainly, no one predicted the destruction wrought by Typhoon Morakot when it struck southern Taiwan two weeks ago. The heavens opened, releasing 80 inches of rain that triggered massive mudslides and floods, killing hundreds of villagers and imperiling the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou, whose approval rating plummeted.
