When the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, Mao Zedong claimed: “We can be proud of what we have achieved thus far, but a long way lies ahead of us.” Now sixty years later, China can look back on a remarkable developmental track. About 350 million people have been lifted out of poverty and Chinese are prouder of their country than ever before. But now, after decades of spectacular development, China is once again at a critical juncture, as expectations domestically and abroad are growing faster than the ability to meet them.
