Two years ago, 184 Chinese scholars published a 20-volume book entitled An Outline of Sustainable Development in China. It was the first large-scale Chinese academic work on sustainable development and had taken almost three years to produce.
Looking forward to 2050, when most analysts, including the UN, predict that China will have a population of 1.5bn, it foresaw China undergoing dramatic change. It anticipated an average life expectancy of 85. It predicted that the population would have on average 14 years of education, where they currently have eight.
